Typonine Stencil

Typonine Stencil among the Best Typefaces of 2008 by Typographica

Type designers, educators, historians, engineers, and users select the year’s best new font releases.

Typonine Stencil is an unusual take on industrial letterforms. The family’s burly finesse overturns the notion that such letterforms only belong to wooden crates and cartons, rugged sites and atmospheres. It’s meant for headlines, signage, and custom lettering – uses for which its two widths and three weights are perfect.

Stencil types are too often associated with and derived from shipping container lettering: viz., Stencil, Tea Chest and FF Karton. Or they are simply lame extensions of existing fonts (eg. URW Garamond Stencil). It is a joy to welcome a face like Typonine Stencil that is not based on a previous font and which has Dutch Oldstyle characteristics. ... But the basic weight and width is a refreshingly sharp design that immediately reminded me of W.A. Dwiggins’ Imperial stencil alphabet. That elusive combination of power and grace he achieved is here in Typonine Stencil.— Paul Shaw
